Does a logbook service at an independent workshop void my new car warranty?
No, not on its own. Australia's consumer regulator, the ACCC, has said an independent repairer can complete and stamp your logbook service without affecting the manufacturer's warranty, as long as the service follows the manufacturer's requirements and uses parts of appropriate quality.
When you need a logbook service
- Your car is still under the manufacturer's warranty
- The logbook or dash says a scheduled service is due by kilometres or months
- You want a complete, stamped service history for resale
- You've bought a used car and want to bring its logbook history up to date
What is a logbook service?
Every manufacturer publishes a service schedule for each model. It lists what to replace and inspect at set intervals of time and kilometres. A logbook service follows that schedule exactly for your car’s current interval, and it is then recorded in the service book or digital service record.
Some intervals are routine (oil, filter and inspections). Others include bigger items such as spark plugs, brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid or a timing belt. Knowing which interval you’re at is the first step, so we check before quoting.
Can an independent mechanic do my logbook service?
Yes. According to CHOICE’s summary of the ACCC’s guidance, an independent repairer can sign or stamp your logbook once the service is done without it affecting the manufacturer’s warranty, provided the manufacturer’s essential requirements are met. That means using the right fluids and parts of appropriate quality, and doing every item on the schedule.
Why does a complete service history matter?
A full, stamped history supports any warranty claim, shows buyers the car has been looked after, and helps the next mechanic understand what has and hasn’t been done. Gaps in the history are one of the first things buyers and dealers notice.
Questions worth asking your mechanic
Whoever works on your car, these questions help you understand the job and the quote:
- Which logbook service interval is my car at, and what does it include?
- Will you follow the manufacturer's specifications for oil and fluids?
- Are the parts you use of appropriate quality for warranty purposes?
- Will you stamp the logbook or update the digital service record?

Frequently asked questions
Will you stamp my logbook?
Yes. Once the scheduled service is complete, we record it in your logbook. If your car uses a digital service record, ask us when you book how it will be updated.
Do I have to go back to the dealer while my car is under warranty?
No. The ACCC's position is that independent workshops can service new cars without voiding the manufacturer's warranty, provided the service is done to the manufacturer's specifications. Some dealer-sold extended warranties have their own conditions, so check those documents.
What if my logbook is missing?
Bring the car in and we'll service it to the manufacturer's schedule for its age and kilometres, and give you a written record of the work.
