What are the signs of transmission problems?
Signs include slipping (engine revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate), delayed or harsh gear changes, a shudder when moving off, grinding or whining noises, fluid leaks, and a burning smell. Some problems are caused by low or degraded fluid or a software or sensor fault rather than internal failure, so diagnosis comes first.
Signs of a transmission or clutch problem
- Engine revs flare but the car doesn't speed up (slipping)
- Delayed engagement when selecting Drive or Reverse
- Harsh, jerky or late gear changes
- Shuddering when moving off
- Grinding when changing gears in a manual
- Red or brown fluid under the car, or a burning smell
Automatic, manual, CVT and dual-clutch
Modern cars use several kinds of transmission. Traditional automatics, continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and dual-clutch transmissions are all controlled by a computer and depend heavily on the correct fluid. Manual gearboxes use a clutch operated by a hydraulic or cable system. Each has its own common faults.
How do we diagnose transmission problems?
We start with the simple checks that are often overlooked: fluid level and condition, leaks and stored fault codes. A road test helps us feel how and when the problem happens. From there we can tell you whether the issue is a service item, a sensor or control fault, an external repair, or something internal.
When is specialist work needed?
Some internal automatic transmission repairs need specialist rebuilding facilities. Where that’s the case, we tell you up front and explain your options, including a reconditioned or replacement unit.
Questions worth asking your mechanic
Whoever works on your car, these questions help you understand the job and the quote:
- Have you checked fluid level and condition first?
- Are there stored transmission fault codes?
- Is this a repair, a service, or a replacement situation?
- What fluid specification does my transmission need?

Frequently asked questions
Does an automatic transmission need servicing?
Many do, at intervals set by the manufacturer — some are labelled "sealed for life" but still benefit from fluid changes under heavy use. Check your logbook or ask us.
Why is my clutch slipping?
Clutch friction material wears over time. Slipping can also be caused by oil contamination or a hydraulic fault. We'll confirm which before recommending a clutch replacement.
